Description
Despite being located in the middle of Sweden, Motala is connected to both the west and the east coasts of Sweden via lakes, rivers and the Göta Canal. Motala is situated on the eastern shores of Lake Vättern, Sweden's second largest lake (1,912 km2 (738 sq mi) and the sixth largest in Europe. For several centuries (it's church dates back to the 13th century), Motala remained a small village, mainly regarded as a stopping post on the road to the nearby town of Vadstena, one of cultural centres of medieval Sweden. However, King Gustav Vasa (1496-1560 )had a manor house built at Motala and later Queen Kristina (1626-1689) had a summer residence built at the spa resort of Medevi, 20 km north of the town.
