Artist's Description

Mongoose (Manakuke in Hawaiian) is a Small Asian Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus), an invasive species brought from Jamaica in 1883 to control the rat population on sugar cane plantations in Hawaii. The attempt failed since rats are active at night and mongoose mostly during the day. They have no natural predators on the islands and threaten the bird population and also humans since they carry leptospirosis which their droppings transfer to streams and water supplies. Found this one on Hapuna Beach on the Big Island.
