Description
Punalu'u beach is the most famous black sand beach of Hawaii and is also known as just 'Black Sand Beach'. The color of the sand is a result of the interaction between lava and water. When lava reaches the ocean it is forced to cool rapidly causing it to shatter into sand like grains. A large flow of lava has the potential to create a new black sand beach practically overnight. Since a black sand beach is made by a lava flow in a one time event, they tend to be rather short lived since sands do not get replenished if currents or storms wash sand into deeper water. There are underwater freshwater springs in Punalu’u bay. The water from these springs is cold and drifts on top of the salt water. These springs are very likely the name givers of this bay. Punalu'u means 'coral dived for' or 'spring dived for' in the Hawaiian language.
